The science

Light therapy is one of the most studied non-invasive skin technologies. Here is what the research says, and what it does not say.

Red light (630–660 nm)

Red wavelengths are absorbed by cells in the skin and are thought to support collagen production and circulation. Published trials report improvements in wrinkles, roughness and elasticity after several weeks of consistent use.

Near-infrared (850 nm)

Near-infrared light reaches deeper than visible red. It is used in skin devices alongside red light and appears in the manufacturer FDA record cited for the 4D mask (660 nm and 850 nm).

EMS (electrical muscle stimulation)

EMS sends low-level pulses that make muscles contract. In our 6D mask and EMS wearables, it complements light therapy by toning the area it touches. EMS results come from regular use over time, and individual results vary.

Key studies

  • Wunsch & Matuschka, 2014. Randomized controlled trial with 136 volunteers using red and near-infrared light. Improved complexion and roughness, with higher collagen density on ultrasound. PubMed 24286286 (DOI)
  • Mota et al., 2023. 137 women aged 40–65 using 660 nm light. Periocular wrinkle volume fell 31.6% after 10 sessions over 4 weeks. PubMed 36780572 (DOI)
  • Lee et al., 2007. 76 patients, 633 nm plus 830 nm LED versus placebo. Wrinkles improved, with better elasticity and no adverse effects reported. PubMed 17566756 (DOI)
  • Nam et al., 2017. 52 women, 12 weeks of daily 660 nm LED treatment. Wrinkle measurements improved. PubMed 28195844 (DOI)

These studies were not run on JOVS products and do not guarantee a specific outcome. Results vary by person, device and consistency of use.

FDA record

The manufacturer behind the JOVS 4D mask holds FDA 510(k) K244020, covering full-face wrinkle treatment with 660 nm and 850 nm light.
